About Antigua
Antigua is the largest of the English-speaking Leeward Islands of the Caribbean and lies just north of the islands of St. Martin, St. Barths, St. Kitts and Nevis. Antigua enjoys a fabulous climate with year round sunshine, averaging 26-30 degrees C, low rainfall and low humidity making it one of the sunniest Caribbean islands.
Just 14 miles long and 11 miles wide, the local Antiguans are proud to say their island has 365 beaches – one for every day of the year. The beaches of Antigua are stunning, largely undeveloped with long stretches of powdery sand, small secluded coves and fringed with a magnificent, protective coral reef. The waters are crystal clear and a distinctly mesmerising Caribbean blue.
With its long British maritime history, Antigua was once considered to be the most important trading port in the Caribbean. Interesting monuments to this history are dotted throughout the island including the restored Georgian “Nelson’s Dockyard” (named after Admiral Nelson himself), Betty’s Hope, one of the largest sugar plantations and the original capital of Antigua, Parham village.
From scenic walks to explore the beauty of the island , an amazing coastline for swimming, snorkelling and diving, idyllic sailing, fishing and fabulous watersports, tennis, golf and horse-riding as well as the “all important” cricket so close to the Antiguans ways of life, Antigua has something for everyone. A trip to Pricky Pear Island or nearby Barbuda with its pink sand beaches is also highly recommended. The capital of Antigua is now St. John’s, a bustling town with original historical architecture, interesting markets and many visitors take advantage of the duty-free shopping at St. John’s Heritage Quay and Redcliffe Quay.
With the constant passing trade winds and the softly indented coastline, Antigua is the perfect playground for some of the finest sailing in the West Indies attracting enthusiasts from all over the world during the sailing weeks, racing weeks and regattas.
